Isabella is a thirteen year old biracial girl who does not identify with one half of her heritage. Abuela, Isabella's grandmother, wants her to learn her father's first language, Spanish, but Isabella is adamant about learnng the language.

When Isabella learns that her family has to move to a predominantly Mexican-American neighborhood, she becomes worried that she will not fit in, and the children in her new neighborhood will not be able to understand her, so she grudgingly agrees to begin to start Spanish lessons with her abuela.

At the goading of Isabella's best friend she decides to put a stop to having to learn Spanish until one day she meets a new kind of friend.
